Launching of Wesak Celebration on the Eve of Wesak Day via the Illumination of the temple (27 May 2010)

I thank you for the honour of being invited to the Buddhist Maha Vihara to the illumination of this 115 years old temple in conjunction with Wesak 2010 celebrations.

The celebration of Wesak is to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and passing or attainment of Nirvana by the Great Lord Siddhartha Buddha. It is time for us, Buddhist, to reaffirm our commitment and ponder the practice of Buddha's teachings.

I also note that in your program you have allocated time during the Wesak period , for children to practice their devotion. This is something that is wise and forward thinking. Children are our future and giving them the time and space for devotion lays a good foundation and paves the way forward for them.

I enjoy the quieter start, by this illumination to a great day tomorrow, where we will witness the raising of the Buddhist flag, witnessed by our Prime Minister and peaked by the float procession. These signify the unique harmony and spirit of respect among religions that hold dear in Malaysia. All Buddhist have an important role to play in 1Malaysia.

The theme for this year, “Promoting Harmony through Understanding” mirrors our commitment, efforts and spirit.

We witness political and economic turmoil, at home and abroad. The question remains:
How do we “win peace”? I believe the answer may lie in the principles of Buddhism and the teachings of Lord Buddha, that is the message of Peace, Love, Respect & Happiness to all living beings.

Buddhism is one religion that commissioned neither lethal force nor crusading armies even during Buddha's time. In a multi racial & multi religious country like Malaysia, Peace must be constantly preached & practiced “Hatred is overcome only by Non Hatred” Chapter 1 -Yamaka Vagga by the Buddha.

Ladies & Gentlemen, let us join hands not only to reflect but to take serious efforts in promoting harmony throughout our life via the Right Understanding.
