THE OCCASION OF THE 10th UTAR CONVOCATION
It is a great honour and privilege for me to be here to witness and share the pride of this Convocation ceremony. This 10th Convocation of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman is indeed going to be a memorable event for everyone here. I would like to extend my heartiest congratulations to all the graduands and their family, and their loved ones.
I would also like to congratulate UTAR, under the guidance and stewardship of Tun Dr. Ling Liong Sik; and under the leadership of Ir. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Chuah Hean Teik, together with all UTAR staff, have reached yet another admirable mileage in the history of this University. I was made to understand that within seven-and-half years, UTAR has now registered more than 18,000 students, and produced over 18,000 graduates. This is certainly the result of teamwork, dedication and commitment of every member in the big UTAR family.
Ladies and Gentlemen
Graduation ceremony such as this is a memorable event in one’s life. It marks another milestone in life, and not only does it signify the end of one journey, but it also means the start of another. As the graduands in the hall today step out into the real challenging world, graduands, keep your wits with you in addition to your technical know-how. And in spite of your current academic success, do bear in mind that it is not the end of your quest for knowledge. You should view this ceremony as a continuum towards another level of constant self advancement. In making the transition into the working world, be positive in your approach to carving your career path.
The 21st century economy dictates that as a nation, we should strive to rise above others to ensure our survival and excellence. Information revolution continues to boost economy, and because of the constant technology breakthroughs, new industries are also emerging. We can see such instances in the emergence of industries like biomedicine, nanotechnology or nanophotonics which was unheard of until a few years ago. Keep yourselves updated with the trends that are happening around you, and not just those related to your field of study or work.
Increasing globalisation will provide larger markets and tougher competitions. Malaysia is braving itself for this tough competition. Now, more emphasis is given on the advancement of the people, particularly graduates who are the essence of this work force. As companies become innovative, they will require workers who can constantly update their skills in order to strengthen their value for the organisation. With a better competitive edge due to free trade and open financial systems, companies are expected to rise to the challenges. Thus, employees must keep learning new skills with each new orientation, because along with the new innovation, more will be expected of you.
Ladies and Gentlemen
In order to succeed in life, one must carry within himself/herself principles of virtue and morality. Perseverance is another value that each one of us needs to uphold in life. The path towards success is not always smooth; it is always full of obstacles. However, only by overcoming these obstacles can you know your true potentials and have higher confidence. Should you fall, pick yourself up and continue on your chosen path. The experience you gain from failure will be worth more than you can imagine. And remember, in the words of Sir Winston Churchill, ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts’.
You are now becoming part of the prolific group that will contribute to the development of the nation. For you to do that the best is by elevating yourself concurrently with the pace of the nation. But at the same time, maintain your integrity and ethics, uphold the good moral values your parents have taught you, work smart and be sincere to those around you. As you step out of this hall with the scroll in your hand, you are also responsible to carry the good name of your alma mater.
This ceremony should not be viewed as the last link between you and this University. Instead, today marks the start of a whole new dimension of your relationship with UTAR. Even as you build your career and move on with your life, you are still part of the big UTAR family. I urge you to continue your participation and contribution to the development of the University and to uphold the good name of your alma mater.
Ladies and gentlemen
We have been brought up to honour our parents and respect our elders and teachers. Through them, we have been exposed to discipline, integrity, honesty and to care and achieve success. Graduands, your success and presence here is because of your family, your teachers and many others who have supported and guided you. Therefore, in return, you should play your part as grateful sons and daughters. Be appreciative and show your concern for your family and your community.
Indeed, UTAR has taken the responsibility of producing graduates who not only fulfil the needs of the industry, but also are caring and compassionate citizens who are intellectually capable, socially cooperative, civic-minded and care for their fellow countrymen. Graduands, you are the future leaders in the country. As such, think and take actions that will bring benefit to everyone around you, and be a dependable and reliable leader within yourself, for this is a foundation for you to lead others in the future.
I am confident that UTAR is firmly committed to achieve excellence in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and expertise with the emphasis on nurturing the holistic development of individuals towards nation building. Thus, I pledge my support in all UTAR future endeavours, and excitedly look forward to the achievements and milestones of this University.
