I appreciate the concern for MCA by Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman, Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak when he was in Hua Hin, Thailand recently. He mentioned that he was pleased that Dato’ Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek and I have taken his advice to come together quickly to resolve our issues and unite the Party.

This cannot be interpreted as an intervention into MCA’s internal Party matters. There is always room for advice, suggestions and proposals from all quarters within and outside the party, so long as they are constructive and are given with a sincere heart.

Dato’ Seri Najib as the head of the BN family has all the more reasons to be concerned about the situation within one of its major component parties. A strong party that is able to serve all Malaysians under the 1Malaysia concept remains one of the key focuses of BN component parties.

On the same note, I must thank Dato’ Seri Dr. Chua for publicly saying that he believed in my sincerity in working together with him for the greater good of the Party. The greater unity plan actually reflects our shared ability to put the past behind us and our shared vision to stride forward confidently as a team.

I am confident Dato’ Seri Dr. Chua as well as other like-minded MCA leaders have the commitment to make the unity plan work, to bring the Party out of the woods and to greater heights.

Hi Dato Ong,

I pay my respects to both you and Dr Chua equally on this regard. I think you are both very courageous. The most important thing is that both of you are able to turn the negative impacts into positive movements. I cannot understand why some of our fellow brothers and sisters in Malaysia cannot accept this concept. Is it because they are, as the Chinese saying goes, ‘見不得人好的心態’?

I think Alan Cohen’s quote is very suitable for the MCA’s present situation:

“It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power”

Dato Sri Ong should try to get the unity plan with Dr.Chua endosed by the coming AGM + EGM so as it becomes the common wishes of the delegates rather than Dato Ong and Dr.Chua 's camps alone.
Is MCA here to guard Chinese interests?
written by Loh Meng Kow, October 27, 2009
I refer to the report appearing in Malaysiakini that MCA Youth chief Wee Ka Siong is far from satisfied with the situation in MCA, despite the truce declared between the party’s feuding leaders.

There appears to be different interpretations as to the authority of an EGM. One considers EGM supersedes the constitution under which the EGM was called whereby a majority decision at the EGM rules. The other argues that the EGM provides the results to be read together with the constitution. The latter should prevail since there are provisions in the constitution that some issues need confirmation by two third votes of the members in assembly. Otherwise an EGM could be called to negate the constitution with a simple majority vote.

Looking in that light, one should now examine whether the Central committee had in fact carried out the decision of the EGM. The EGM did not return a two-third majority to relieve Ong Tee Keat of his Presidency. Those eager for an opening for upward mobility are grumbling that he did not resign, but he could not be accused of not respecting the decision of the EGM read with the Constitution.

The EGM returned a majority vote for Dr. Chua Soi lek to remain members of MCA. There were doubts whether the President would be able to accept to work with Chua Soi lek, and to have peaceful coexistence with him. The show of unity on 22 October in MCA building confirms that the two warring factions respect the decision of EGM and declared that for greater unity, they would serve MCA together.

The third resolution returned a majority vote to deny Dr. Chua Soi Lek retaining his position as Deputy President. There was no provision in the constitution to determine the condition under which a person suspended from performing his official duty could be returned to his post. There was however a definite requirement that a person can only be removed from his position when the assembly returns a two third majority. When a position is vacant on account of the incumbent being suspended for whatever reason, that vacancy exists on a temporary basis of indefinite duration. For a vacancy to be filled, the incumbent though suspended had to be removed first. Thus, the provision of the constitution has to be respected. Semantic aside, resolution 3 should be interpreted as to whether CSL should be removed form his position as deputy president. The EGM voted yes but short of a two third majority to remove CSL. Thus CSL retains his position as Deputy President if the decision of the EGM and the constitution is respected.

Wee Ka Siong must have said that the central Committee of MCA did not respect the EGM by allowing Liow Tiong Lai to be voted in as deputy President on 22 October 2009. Liow Tiong Lai too claimed that the result of the EGM should be respected. He should announce now that he has vacated the seat so that the implementation of the EGM is complete.

Ong Tee Keat together with Chua Soi Lek announced that they agreed to work together. That has curiously led some members of the Central Committee to declare that their agreement is subject to approval by the Central Committee. It would imply that Ong and Chua cannot respect the EGM on their own to cooperate without the approval of the Central Committee. Since when has the constitution of MCA allowed its Central Committee to form subgroups to endorse unity of members of the party?
The statement demanding that the agreement of Chua and Ong be subject to review by the central Committee confirms the suspicion of what went through their minds.

They were not happy that the President and his deputy cooperate with each other, like what they declared they would do after the EGM. They wanted to hear their ‘horse-trading’ which they tried to prevent by instigating for CSL’s removal which resulted in the EGM. That was the basis why they expressed unhappiness that Chua and Ong agreed to work together without them participating in the discussion. When two parties cooperate has it any business of the third party? That would be only logical if they were negotiating for sharing spoils. But are MCA members there to share spoils. Since they have boldly declared it, they had taken it as natural to be in political party for personal gains, and when they are now more man, their shares are lessened. Yet the Chinese community thinks that MCA is there to guard their interest.

Dato Ong, I'm a Malaysian staying/based overseas since 1980's. And have not pay any attention to politics happening in M'sia but today I can't stop myself 'complained' my personal view on MCA.

Recent EGM, re-accept Dr Chua n many unhappiness among central committee members on 'who has the final say' etc ... indicate the chinese people is 'so un-united' among themselves. What happen to 'bad news don't talk out loud within family compound values'??

Can't the central committee held a closed-door meeting to solved such minor thigs as sacking and re-instate of Dr Chua membership until Dr Chua has to 'use' his power to show MCA he has the people support too. Then after surprised votes, MCA start to 'repair' the holes to save power struggle??

I really don't understand the 'agenda' ...

Mr President,
I totally disagree with Kata Sword in asking you to resign. He is no better than the group who betray you.The way they plan your downfall is despicable. All the more you should stay on.Not because you did not keep your promise it was the manner which they treated you.I think the main reason you go ahead with the EGM was because they fed you with the wrong information. Now you did the right thing. JUst go ahead to implement what is right for the party and the people.

Katana Sword,

I think your comment is rather immature. Look at all the MCA elected MPs in the past, how many of them have kept their promises and really fought with UMMO for the sake of the Chinese ethnicity group? How many elected MPs have not considered their personal interests their first priority? How about the ‘Gang of 3’ and 14 cc that held a press conference over the unity plan yesterday afternoon (Malaysiakini), do they really care about the interests of the party? I suggest you spend some time to go and gather more information, and then let us know the answer (please only provide facts, we are not interested in fictitious and destructive comments).

Let Go The Ego
written by A S WENG, October 28, 2009
The Chinese community is getting impatient of the Sandiwara plaguing the party. The President has already called for a truce with the warring parties and CSL should be congratulated for his magnanimity to bury the hatchet paving the way to implement the Greater Unity Plan. Noticeably, LTL is dragging his feet and seems to be acting without any positive directions and contributions towards achieving stability in the party which is quiet intriguing. Sincerity is not only to be preached but shown through actions and commitments to solve the impasse faced by the party.
Datuk Seri Liow has been calling the President to respect the outcomes of the EGM which is most suspicious with ulterior motives. The EGM was duly called and held in accordance to the Party’s Constitution. AS such all parties must respect the results of the meeting. I am appalled by the contention of SOME SENIOR PARTY’s LEADERS that Resolution 1 of the EGM warrants the resignation of the MCA’s president If they cannot even read and understand the simple Article 35 of the Constitution, they are not fit to be Central Committee Members. Pledge by the president to step down was nullified by events leading to the casting of votes during the EGM and I do not want to dwell in details on the subject which is widely known by now. Please provide us with acceptable and valid reasons why the president has to quit his post after the EGM. The answers given must be politically, constitutionally and morally acceptable.
That chapter of asking the president to step down IS CLOSED. LTL was at the announcement of the Greater Unity Plan and later he pledged to be part of the plan to unify the party for the sake of Chinese community. He seems to be singing different tunes every now and then which is very annoying and destructive to the party. Leaders ought to be consistent. Be a team player and not creating teams out of a team. From my experience managing an institution, the Deputy and the Vice Presidents have to speak in unison – with one voice only, lending assistance and moral support to the President. It is just a phone call away nowadays to seek clarifications or communications between leaders. Calling for press conference is not only disrespectful to the chair but indicating arrogance and defiance and can be easily manipulated by the interested parties.
There are some little napoleons in the CC who have self-vested interest creating havocs in the party. Unfortunately, some of the Big Boys and Girls are so simplistic and naïve to be playing the tunes being orchestrated by the little devilish CCs. Common, come to your senses. The Greater Unity Plan has been stressed to be inclusive and thus is politically, constitutionally and morally viable to save MCA from being irrelevant and rejected by the people.
Enough is enough. Lets pull our resources together to reform and reenergize MCA so that it can climb to greater heights to serve the people courageously and effectively. Let go the EGO, let bygones be bygones and let common sense prevail. Unite for the bigger picture to regain the dignity and credibility of the party.
