I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement to liberalise 27 sub-sectors in the services sector by removing the requirement for 30% bumiputera equity. This is a step forward in the right direction and shows serious intention on the part of the Government to face the challenges arising from globalization.
I believe the move is introduced not only to make Malaysia more attractive to foreign investors. It will also make us – Malaysians –more competitive as we gear ourselves up for a truly level playing field in the global arena.
We will take on the challenge. MCA Ministers and Deputy Ministers will work with the PM to further realise this important national mission which most of the sectors (health, transport, tourism and housing) come under MCA Ministers’ portfolio.
The word liberalization is not just a convenient buzzword. We are committed to see through this challenge by ensuring that liberalization actually takes place at implementation level at Ministries and Government agencies. These include making sure the procurement process for Malaysian companies are clearly, openly and fairly implemented.
For liberalization of these sectors to fully take place, care must be taken that Government support in the form of aids and grants are channelled to companies that merit them.
The challenges that the wave of globalization brings affect all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion. It is time that we discard the age old obsession with racial quotas.
This is the time where we come together once again to craft a comprehensive and sustainable plan to ensure that we, as Malaysians become more competitive and stronger in the future.

Good move although it is long overdue. However there still many other sectors, the Government need to liberalise. Hope it not a half-baked cake. As UMNO/BN is weak, you & MCA and other parties need to be seen to take the co-lead in liberalising the whole market and those other so-called quotas that are seen as racial line rather than the interests of all Malaysians, 1Malaysia regardless of races and religions.
